HairGrid is a precision styling tool created by a Black woman who needed a better way to see and style the back of her own head.
Djoulisa Allen is the founder and creator of HairGrid. As a Black woman who styles her own hair, she spent years navigating the same frustration millions of women know too well: there was no reliable way to see the back of her head while styling.
The two-mirror juggle. The phone propped against a wall. The uneven parts discovered only after hours of work. She knew there had to be a better way.
Rather than wait for someone else to build it, she created HairGrid — a purpose-built tool designed specifically for the way Black women care for their hair.
HairGrid streams a live rear camera view from your phone to your laptop screen, with an adjustable precision grid overlay. It gives you a clear, hands-free view of the back of your head while you style.
The grid helps you part evenly, section consistently, and replicate styles that worked. Session history lets you track your progress over time.
All you need is an iPhone, a laptop, and a phone stand. Both devices connect wirelessly over the same Wi-Fi network. No special equipment, no complicated setup.
We believe that every woman deserves the same level of precision and control at home that she would receive in a professional salon. HairGrid exists to close that gap — starting with the simplest, most overlooked problem: being able to see what you are doing.
HairGrid was created by someone who personally experiences the problem it solves. That lived experience guides every product decision.
Not a novelty filter or a social feature. HairGrid is a functional styling tool built to fit naturally into your existing hair care routine.
Beta testers and early users have a direct voice in shaping what gets built next. Your feedback is our product roadmap.
No special equipment required. If you have a phone, a laptop, and a stand, you have everything you need to use HairGrid.
